Interior Dept. Warns Shell on Arctic Drilling

The Shell Oil Company must provide a detailed plan addressing numerous safety and operational issues that plagued its efforts to extract oil beneath the Arctic Ocean last year if it wants to resume drilling off the coast of Alaska, the Interior Department said Thursday.

Shell has already announced that it will not return to the Arctic Ocean in 2013, saying
would take a “pause” to repair its damaged equipment and review its drilling and safety 

systems.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said that would not be enough. He said the company must demonstrate to the government and an independent reviewer that it has the equipment, the management capacity and a plan for all contingencies before it can resume operations.

“Shell screwed up in 2012 and we’re not going to let them screw up whenever their pause is removed unless they have these systems in place,” Mr. Salazar said in a news briefing Thursday.

*Esta noticia se trata de un ultimatum que le hizo el departamento del interior Estadounidense a la compañía petrolera SHELL, sobre su protocolo de extracción de recursos en el Ártico, ya que como se ha visto últimamente, estas excavaciones afectan mucho la estructura de los polos, y pone en riesgo la vida de los animales que allí habitan, por eso el departamento del interior, le exige replantear sus políticas de seguridad y cuidado con este delicado e importante terreno del mundo, para reducir la destrucción que a mi parecer, ya es inminente  de los polos; ademas de esto, la noticia dice, que representantes de SHELL presentaron una carta en respuesta, diciendo que ya han replanteado sus políticas de seguridad y que no creen que deban hacer otros cambios en las mismas, pero las pruebas dicen lo contrario, ya que gran parte de la destrucción del ártico es gracias a SHELL, ahora toca esperar que pasara con esta decisión  porque es importante para TODO EL MUNDO, que se reduzcan estas excavaciones en zonas que están en riesgo, donde no solo hay hielo, también hay vida.
